Disneyland Corn Dogs, the Untold Story!

When we did the "Dinner and a Show" event, some members of our group decided to get Disneyland's famous corn dogs for their dinner entree.

In this video interview from 2010, Gary Maggetti, who was at that time Disneyland's Food and Beverage Director, talks about the unlikely history of the Disneyland Corn Dog.

Of course, now the Little Red Wagon and Corn Dog Castle are well established as THE places to get your corn dogs in, respectively, Disneyland and California Adventure, as well as the Stage Door Cafe in Disneyland next to the Golden Horseshoe Saloon.

Genie Appearance at Disneyland

Tonight the Disneyland Fan Club Meetup Group held a "Dinner And A Show" event. First, we got a bunch of tables over at Pacific Wharf next to the Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill restaurant, and people got their favorite foods from the great selection of local venues.

There are a lot of delicious food sources in the area. Besides the Cocina Cucamonga, Lucky Fortune Cookery, Pacific Wharf Café, and the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, which are all located right on the Wharf, eateries like Award Wieners, the Corn Dog Castle, Paradise Garden Grill, Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, and many others are located nearby.

After dinner we all went to the late showing of "Aladdin" at the Hyperion Theater in Hollywood Land. The show is a Broadway-style musical based on the classic animated Disney film, Aladdin. The Genie is the star of the show, and his lines are constantly updated to include current events. Not to be missed!

The folks at "Positively Mommy" were at Disneyland recently and ran into the Genie character just inside the entrance. This was a very rare occurrence! The Genie is not often seen, especially on the Disneyland side! Here's the video.

Global Sing-Along Celebrates 50th Anniversary of ‘it’s a small world’

As you may have heard on ABC-TV’s "Good Morning America," you’re invited to join a first-of-its-kind, online global sing-along at SmallWorld50.com to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world,” – the classic Disney Parks attraction that opened as a tribute to UNICEF’s work for children around the world at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

SmallWorld50.com is a "global hub" of music and harmony where you can record a video of yourself singing the classic song and create a virtual "it's a small world"® doll to benefit UNICEF (United Nation's Children's Fund). UNICEF provides health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more to children around the world.

The Walt Disney Company will donate USD $150,000 to benefit UNICEF in honor of the 50th anniversary of "it's a small world," plus USD $1 for every sing-along video recorded and another USD $1 for every virtual doll created, up to USD $100,000.

Disney began its relationship with UNICEF in 1964 with the debut of "it's a small world" at the New York World's Fair. More recently, Disney and UNICEF have worked together to create a brighter tomorrow for thousands of children through programming that helps foster imagination and creativity.

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, guests and cast members at Disney Parks around the world will unite in song to celebrate the 50th anniversary of "it's a small world," the classic Disney Parks attraction that opened as a tribute to peace and hope at the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Click here to visit the site where you can record your own sing-along version of "it's a small world" or create your own virtual doll!

The Beginning of 'it's a small world'

This year Disneyland celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of its most famous attractions, "it's a small world."

The ride actually debuted at the New York World's Fair in 1964, and then moved to its home at Disneyland in 1966.

The Disney Parks dug into their archives and found historical footage from both the World’s Fair and the attraction’s opening day at Disneyland. Imagineer Kim Irvine takes us down memory lane, along with co-composer of the attraction’s unforgettable theme song, Richard Sherman. You’ll even hear from Walt Disney himself, as he shows off the plans for “it’s a small world” in a clip from the “Wonderful World of Color” television show.

Disney Fact or Fiction Episode 1 - Walt Disney's Apartment

I stumbled across some unique Disney videos today, including three episodes of a show called "Disney Fact or Fiction."

This first episode explores the issue of whether Walt Disney had an apartment at Disneyland, where it actually was located (and rumored to be located), and the history involved. People interviewed for the episode include Disney Legend and Imagineer Tony Baxter and original Mouseketeer Bobby Burgess.

The episode was only posted to YouTube in January of this year by Disney Park Videos, but it must be much older than that, as it shows the space above the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction being used for the Disney Gallery. The Gallery was closed in 2007 and reopened in 2008 as the Disneyland Dream Suite.

Disneynature's Bears

From the official description:

Disneynature's "Bears" opens in theatres in time for Earth Day on April 18, 2014!

The program "Protect Our National Parks" invites moviegoers to see the film during opening week (April 18-24, 2014) and Disneynature, via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, will make a contribution to the National Park Foundation to protect wildlife and wild places across America's National Park system.

In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature's upcoming True Life Adventure "Bears" showcases a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life's most important lessons. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting—but risky—as the cubs' playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches. As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bears must work hard to find food—ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run—while staying safe from rival male bears and predators, including an ever-present wolf pack. "Bears" captures the fast-moving action and suspense of life in one of the planet's last great wildernesses—Alaska!

Directed by Alastair Fothergill ("Earth," "African Cats" and "Chimpanzee") and Keith Scholey ("African Cats"), "Bears" arrives in theaters April 18, 2014, to celebrate Earth Day.

This day in Disney history, March 18th, 1967, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction opened in New Orleans Square.

The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure at California Adventure

"Ariel's Undersea Adventure" is a ride based on the movie "The Little Mermaid," and features popular scenes, songs and characters from the film. It's a very popular attraction!

It needs some maintenance and refurbishment, however, before the summer crowds arrive, so it will be closing from March 20 (next week!) until mid-May.

If you can't get to California Adventure to go on the ride before it closes, you can still enjoy it right here, as if you were there in person! Click the video below and see!

Fantasy Faire at Disneyland Park Celebrates its One-Year Anniversary

One year ago today saw the expansion of Fantasyland at Disneyland park with the addition of Fantasy Faire, featuring the Royal Hall, the Royal Theatre and Maurice's Treats. Fantasy Faire now hosts many of the meet-and-greets for the Disney Princesses like Cinderella, Aurora, Snow White, Ariel, and others.

To celebrate this very special occasion, Disney Parks Blog author Erin Glover stopped by the Royal Theatre to chat with Mr. Smythe and Mr. Jones, who join Rapunzel and Belle onstage each day, about the one-year anniversary of this new Disneyland park guest favorite.

"Disneyland Today" Now Covers The Entire Disneyland Resort

It was announced yesterday on the Disney Parks blog that "Disneyland Today" would be expanding (including incorporating #DCAToday) to cover the entire Disneyland Resort.

This is not (yet) a new mobile app, but rather a way to keep up with at-the-DLR news through Facebook and Twitter (for those of us who can easily access Facebook and Twitter while at the parks . . .).

The official announcement was:

"Big news for Disneyland Resort guests today … Disneyland Today is growing! Beginning today, the official source for in-park social media updates and information, Disneyland Today, will expand to cover the entire Disneyland Resort.

"Joining forces with DCA Today, Disneyland Today will now answer questions and provide real-time tips and updates for the Downtown Disney District and the three hotels of the Disneyland Resort, in addition to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks.

"So be sure to follow @DisneylandToday on Twitter and Facebook.com/DisneylandToday on your next visit to the Disneyland Resort."

Our advice: "Like" the Facebook page, subscribe to the Twitter account, and take advantage of the information available. Disney is slow to respond to social media trends, but they do (eventually) respond, so we should cheer their efforts, and encourage them to keep moving forward. Hooray!

Rocket Rods (1998-2000)

Hey, do you remember the old Rocket Rods ride? It used the old PeopleMover track, but with faster vehicles.

Unfortunately, the ride required too many repairs and was closed after only a couple of years of operation.

In this video, let's go back in time and enjoy that ride in all its glory!

Alice in Wonderland ride in Fantasyland at DIsneyland

The Disneyland Fan Club Meetup Group went to Disneyland today, and we made sure to ride the Alice in Wonderland ride, as it is scheduled to be closed for refurbishment from March 10 to July 3, 2014.

Here is a great video from the ThemeParkHD folks that shows off the whole ride in high definition! Enjoy!

The "Indiana Jones Adventure" ride will be closing down for some refurbishment on March 17, scheduled to reopen on May 8. Watch the videos and let's remember how much fun this ride is and hope that it will reopen soon!

And another video recording, this time with night vision:

140-Disney-Character 'Ultimate Tweet' Announces All-Night Disney Side Party On Both Coasts

The underlying "joke" here is that, when you tweet a tweet on the Twitter website, the tweet can only be 140 characters (alphabet letters, numbers, and so forth) or less.

So, to announce their 24 hour “Rock Your Disney Side Party,” the Disney parks had 140 Disney characters form into the well-known Twitter "hashtag" (#) formation and then posted it on Twitter. The party is set to be a fun-filled 24-hour event at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, featuring Disney heroes and villains from 6 a.m., May 23 to 6 a.m., May 24, 2014 (local time).

You can get more info here: http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2014/02/140-disney-character-ultimate-tweet-announces-all-night-disney-side-party-on-both-coasts/

And here's the video of the 140 Disney characters creating the hashtag symbol.

Huge Success Tonight For Disney's "Frozen"

"Frozen" just won the Oscars for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song (for "Let It Go")!

And as if that weren't enough, today "Frozen" passed $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts. "Frozen" is the second animated feature film to cross the billion dollar mark, the first being Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 3."

To celebrate, please enjoy the "Let It Go" song sequence from "Frozen," courtesy of the fine folks at Walt Disney Animation Studios!
